Cyber Risk Assessment – We are resilient by force not by choice
I happened to be watching glimpse of an old movie, “A Wednesday” and in that Mr. Naseeruddin Shah playing the role of common man frustrated with what’s happening in Bombay with respect to terrorist activities says “we are resilient by force not by choice”. It stuck me and made me think, is this true even for cyber-attacks that Indian enterprises are facing today. Every day we keep hearing breaches happening and some report and most don’t – What can we do to hit back against these forces? and Do we need to create cyber defense systems to protect and hunt them down?. These cyber-attacks that is hurting these enterprises today is not due to they causing any hurt/harm to anyone (Like common man in the movie) but due to rogue people having vested interest in doing so. We still need to battle this out as they are at our door steps. We have to take matter in our hands and become soldiers to defend against these perpetrators. The battle against cyber threat is the battle of self (Enterprise) against these terrorists (Hackers).
So, how do we make this happen, how do we protect our self (Enterprises) against these forces, how do we defend against these perpetrators, – Let’s perform “PDCA Cycle” – Plan to identify if any malicious software is lying within your Information assets, Do test these information assets, Check if there are any infected information assets, Act on them if you find them. Once you have performed these steps and have made sure that your information assets are all clean and safe, we need to make sure that these assets are strengthened to handle any attack in the future against ransomware, dropping of malicious software that these hackers might want to plant into your assets for their personal gain or planned attack.
Threat will increase in the future. Its nature is open-ended. The uncertainty of its potential and it’s intensity will never be estimated or anticipated. But if and when it happens, it will paralyze the entire enterprise information systems if we are not able to identify and defend it.
